The Original Auto Ordnance Corp.
Factory Manufacturing Gages
These are original Auto Ordnance gages used
to produce the 1928 Thompson during WWII. One is even the
personal gage of George E. Goll, the chief inspector.
Over the years these gages have been missing
from view. They may be the last known samples left outside of
those already archived. For some reason these were discarded by
AO and recovered from the West Hurley, NY dump back in the late
1970's. At the time their worth was for the high quality
steel. So, unfortunately some were cut or modified for other
uses. They all were scattered around the shop in bins and tool
boxes until their true identity was discovered in 2004.
The whole collection is pictured below, including the ones that
were cut and modified. My thanks to Tracie Hill of the Thompson
Collectors News and member of the Thompson
Collectors Association for documenting these for the
Thompson archives and for the detailed pictures used below.
To view more the detailed pictures, click on the
individual pictures below this frame and a new window will open.
They were sold recently and I have included
detailed drawings on the Drawings page for the interested.
The lighting for the different pictures makes
the gages appear to be different colors. They are all the same
steel gray color.
